Summary

This dataset contains records for each public elementary and secondary school in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, United States territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands), and Department of Defense schools outside the United States for 1991-1992. Data were reported to the Bureau of the Census for the National Center for Education Statistics by the state coordinators. Records in this file provide the name, address, and telephone number of the school/associated agency, codes for school type and locale, number of full-time equivalent classroom teachers, and students eligible for free lunch programs.

(3) The codebook, data collection instrument, and user guide are provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. 1999-11-02 The SAS data definition statements have been revised to indicate decimal places, to correct the listings for some variables, which were listed as character rather than numeric data, and to designate missing values.

1999-08-18 The variable "locale codes" has been updated for some states by the principal investigator, and a data collection instrument has been added to the codebook.

1998-09-17 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
